Where to start? There are excellent small group tours available that can encompass as much or as little of this region as required and they’re great value for money. Alternatively, if you prefer to travel independently, you’ll definitely need some Spanish! In general, the best months to visit are from November to April, followed by June to September. However, go whenever you can to explore this fascinating region. Flight connections from NZ typically work best via Houston or Los Angeles with Air New Zealand & partner airlines, or via Dallas with Qantas/American Airlines.

Central America

In Central America, Bocas del Toro in Panama was my favourite spot. This collection of islands with unique ecosystems and species offered a relaxed island life, and I stayed with a local family to get the full experience. In Mexico, I attended a lively Mexican wrestling event and loved trying traditional dishes like mole and mezcal. In Belize, I visited the island of Caye Caulker, went snorkelling... Cuba

Cuba’s defiance of the United States under Castro intrigued me. The Cuban people are lovely and hospitable despite the country's poverty. Cycling through Cuba, and visiting iconic places like Santiago de Cuba and the Bay of Pigs was great; it’s one of the best ways to immerse yourselves in the region's history and culture.

The Caribbean

It was later fully refurbished by German sailing enthusiasts and now operates as a tourist vessel. Step back in time to the 1930s with original fixtures, including marble fireplaces and en-suite b... The crew manually hoists the rigging and it’s all done accompanied by music. The beaches of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada were absolutely incredible - can I go back please?!
