Tour itinerary

Day
1
Amman

Ahlan Wa Sahlan! Welcome to Amman, a cosmopolitan city steeped in biblical history. On arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by an Intrepid representative and transferred to your hotel, ready for your adventure to begin at 6pm with an important welcome meeting. If you arrive early, feel free to head out and explore – highlights include the citadel with its amazing sweeping views of Amman, the Jordan Museum, which is home to the Dead Sea Scrolls, or the Roman Theatre, right in the middle of downtown Amman. After the meeting, you may like to get to know your group over an optional dinner, or explore on your own and pick up a coffee from one of the cafes, partnering it with an ara’yes – a toasted sandwich filled with spicy mincemeat.

Day
2
Wadi Rum

After breakfast today, journey down the Desert Highway to the spellbinding Wadi Rum, a landscape of rugged sandstone mountains standing tall among an ochre desert floor. Meet your Bedouin hosts on arrival followed by free time for lunch, before heading into this desolate, romantic area. Transport into the Rum is by way of jeeps operated by the local Bedouin community, part of an initiative by the Jordanian Government to bring much-needed income into this region. Visit several of Wadi Rum’s distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence and spectacular desert landscapes. The Bedouins live in scattered camps throughout the area and you’ll enjoy an evening under the stars at one of these sites.

Day
3
Aqaba

Enjoy a spectacular sunrise at your desert camp, perhaps checking out a few more of the local Wadi Rum sites or taking a scenic walk before you leave. Depart Wadi Rum mid-morning for the city of Aqaba on the Red Sea. Check into your hotel on arrival and head out for a brief orientation of the town with your leader – the small Ottoman Mamluk Fort, dating from the 14th century and from where Lawrence of Arabia rode to Cairo, is worth a look – otherwise, most of the fun is to be found in the water. With great visibility and abundant marine life, this is an incredible spot for snorkelling, and the warm waters play host to clownfish, angelfish, sea turtles and coral formations. Speak to your leader if you’d like to arrange snorkelling, or you may prefer to acquaint yourself with the hotel’s pool or head to the beach.

Day
4
Petra

This morning, enjoy some relaxation time in Aqaba before travelling to the fabled city of Petra. Dating back to the sixth century BC, Petra is considered the crown jewel of Jordan, featuring an impressive series of tombs and dwellings carved directly into the rock. The site remained unknown to the wider world until 1812 when it was visited by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. In 1985, Petra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, and simply put, is one of the world’s most incredible ancient sites. On arrival, settle into your hotel and check out the village before enjoying an included dinner at your hotel.

Day
5
Petra

Petra is justifiably on most people’s list of ‘must-visit’ places. The iconic Petra view – the Treasury’s glorious facade, glimpsed from the narrow cleft known as the Siq – is arguably the single most striking sight of the entire region. The Siq leads through the rock and is sometimes only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side. Join your guide and explore the old Roman road, amphitheatre and several old tombs, before enjoying free time to experience Petra at your own pace. Maybe climb up to the Monastery, carved from a mountain summit, where you’ll find magnificent views of the entire site. To cap off a truly memorable day, be welcomed into a local home for dinner. On the menu will often be maqluba – a casserole with rice, vegetables and chicken which is cooked, flipped, then served with either yoghurt or an Arab salad with tahina sauce. Chat to your friendly family hosts about the delicious meal and what life is like in such a popular spot.

Day
6
Amman

After breakfast, drive to the ancient Crusader castle at Shobak, where your leader will show you the grounds, a small chapel and the original gatehouse. This ancient castle was originally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Saladin in 1189. Depart the castle and stop off at the viewpoint overlooking the Dana Nature Reserve before arriving in Madaba where you’ll visit the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George and see an impressive ancient mosaic map of the Holy Land. Arrive in Amman in the late afternoon, where your leader will recommend some great restaurants to sample the best of the city’s food scene.

Day
7
Amman

Take a short drive north to Jerash, once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world and now home to some of the best Greco-Roman ruins around. Jerash has a striking collection of archways, theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets, and is a beautiful place to spend a morning exploring. Then, drive to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth (420 metres below sea level). This isn’t actually a sea, but rather a super-salty lake (dead because of the lack of life in it) where the density of the water means you’ll go for a float, not a swim. The mud here is supposed to have healing properties, so why not cover yourself from head to toe for a nutrient-rich natural mineral mud bath. Spend some time relaxing here before returning to Amman for the evening. Maybe spend tonight at one of the many bars and restaurants in West Amman or ask your leader about the traditional cafes dotted around the city where locals spend their evenings.

Conditions:

Some of the best scenery in Petra and Wadi Rum is found on hikes. While this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to participate in all activities. At most of the historical sites in Jordan there is no shade. Bring a hat, sun protection, and sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. Winters can get quite cool, so if you're visiting at this time, don't forget to pack some warmer layers too. In Wadi Rum we stay in a permanent tented camp with shared bathroom facilities. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cold at night and warm clothes are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months. Ramadan is an annual month-long festival, during which travel can be a rewarding cultural experience, however some regular services may not be available during the day, such as restaurants or cafes, and occasionally travel can be disrupted by events. Your leader will adjust the itinerary accordingly, but please consider this when selecting your travel dates. You'll find dates and further information in the 'Climate and seasonal information' section of the Essential Trip Information.
Our trip was fabulous!! Every aspect was extremely well organised and so easy. GAdventures and our tour guide, Tam, had a well planned and great itinerary so while we got to see some amazing sights, it was still really well paced and relaxing. The timing for everything that you and the GAdventures tour organised for us was perfect. We had no glitches at all and would highly recommend all of the options to others. Thanks so much for all of your efforts for us; they were much appreciated. Hopefully we can arrange another wonderful trip with you again in the not too distant future.
Vietnam & Cambodia, Chris & Robyn
Just a quick note to thank you very much for your assistance with our recent trip to New York.  We had a great time and everything went extremely well.
USA, Michael & Tonia
We really enjoyed the cruise and this was certainly one of the highlights of the trip. The Azamara cruise was ideal being a smaller boat (and numbers of people) but still provided great service and entertainment. The cruise we did from Athens to Venice was perfect with a destination each day to visit and a great variety of places. I would certainly recommend this cruise company and this particular voyage option.
Europe, Rob & Nikki
We’ve had a fabulous time in Portugal, outstanding guide, great food and wine and the National Geographic tour was superb. What a wonderful country, lovely people and great sights.
Portugal, David & Jill
We really enjoyed our trip to WA. The tour went well. The sights were great. I love WA. We had booked to swim with the whale sharks on the Ningaloo Reef. That was indeed a highlight. The show was really put on by the Humpbacks who were in large numbers and very active. A Humpback whale and her baby swam through our whale shark  group after we first entered the water to get used to our snorkle and flippers. The whale 'tapped' on the arm with her flipper! And the swimming along the colourful world heritage reef was very special. We loved the reef and the whale sharks and all the other fish swimming amongst the reefs. We especially enjoyed the canyon walks and swimming in deep pools. All in all a great trip that we would recommend to others.
Western Australia, Helen & Kevin
We arrived back this morning from a fantastic time away, there were so many pinch yourself moments that we need to rely on our photographs to remember them all. Thank you for your input, everything went smoothly, as usual your itinerary, flights and accommodation was great. Everything you had arranged for us was great.  The Dylan at SFO worked out really well as was very close the BART rail. That was a great recommendation.
USA & Canada, John & Pam
Thank you for organising our USA holiday, it was fantastic. The holiday has been even better than we all imagined.  Thank you for all your help.
USA, Nicki
We have had an excellent holiday and a much-needed break. Thank you for your part in making our holiday a success.
Indonesia, Jane & Richard
We had a fantastic day at Plitvice today - very wet and overcast but absolutely stunning and loved every minute of our 12kms walking and photographing!! Loving our hotel here too ... another perfect one thank you!
Croatia, David & Joss
We had a lovely time on both the cruise and the bus tour but the Bears of course were the highlight. The cruise was great and thankfully we had beautiful sunny weather when we needed it most in Glacier Bay and College Fjord. They were absolutely spectacular. Everything on the cruise was good and we really enjoyed the talks from the Naturalist on board. The Bus Tour was also good and I think they did a good job in changing the itinerary at short notice with the Jasper Fires. The driver and Tour Director were both great.
Alaska & Rockies, Imelda
We had a fab holiday thanks, all the logistics went without a hitch and all the activities were brilliant.
Peru & Chile, Marie
We got back from hol on Saturday and just want to say a massive thank you for all your correspondence with us and bookings that you did. We had an absolute ball and it was an adventure of a lifetime for us. A real dream come true! Loved the US and we are already planning of going back! The RHCP concert was out of this world! Here we are back in cold rainy Chch and it's not really where I want to be right now. Haha. The Beresfords Arms was perfect for our fam and the bonus of breakfast and wine and cheese in the arvo, was amazing! Car hire ran smoothly and the pickup location to hotel was fantastic! The drop off was also awesome! Hope to email you again soon with another dream!
USA, Bree
The Intrepid tour was fantastic too. Visited many interesting places. The old colonial towns and Aztec and Maya sites are my favourites. Caye Caulker was nice. And all of Guatemala.
Central America, Arthur
We had a lovely family time. Worked out well overall at Plantation & Musket Cove. Plantation had several great playgrounds suitable for the infant's age (20 months) & more choices for food to purchase which was good. Could have done with a few more loungers around the pool at Musket .. but overall very good. The garden bures at Musket were very well spaced & private & lovely setting
Fiji, Fiona
Sandra and I are back at home now after a couple of great months away.  The whole trip was great, so thanks for your help with the bookings etc. No issues at all. We very much enjoyed the Rhine cruise with Viking. We couldn’t fault their service and effort, and are happy to recommend them to others.
Europe, Murray & Sandra
The Cruise,  Staff and Food could not be faulted all excellent. The island’s Landscapes beautiful. The island guides we had were great very informative and friendly. Overall a great trip with special friends. Thanks for your help
Tahiti, Jeff & Glen
The trip was fantastic thanks very much for all your input.  Everything worked seamlessly with the flights, accommodation, and car rentals that you booked for us.  The places you booked for us were all in a good location.   The cycle trip through Burgundy was also definitely a highlight. It was truly a trip of a lifetime with everything that we managed to squeeze in, and having a lot of it organised for us was a real treat.
Europe, Mike & Nicky
Our trip was outstanding, our guide was great and we had a whole lot of optional extras that we took the opportunity to enjoy. Everything was seamless and well organised, we had a fantastic group that was just 11 people through Vietnam and 1 extra joined us through Cambodia. I couldn't speak highly enough of G Adventures and their staff. It was a truly memorable experience and I would certainly recommend. Many thanks for all your help and yes we are slowly readjusting to the freezing weather here!
Vietnam & Cambodia, Robyn
Our trip went very well. We loved Ireland with Back Roads, excellent guide and good group. We think of three things, its green, narrow roads and old stone fences! Very interesting history. Hurtigruten had ungraded us to Cabin 601, right at the front with three windows, nice and spacious so very enjoyable. We had rougher seas around the Hebredies and Orkneys but all good.
UK & Ireland, Barbara
Just a quick note to say thank you for another seamless trip with my flights to and within Australia last week. Many of the others had luggage tagging issues due to the way their tickets had been set up by their agents while I quietly breezed through with no problems. Thanks again for being so amazing at what you do.
Georgina, Australia
The Amazon trip was way beyond my expectations and everything else just perfect.
Peru, Adelle
I was on the Marlborough Sounds trip 1 - 7 May, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I appreciated the upgrade to a more comfortable, and quieter cabin. The team is really excellent, they do their best to see that their travellers are being well cared for and get the best possible out of the trip. They also did a brilliant job with the weather! We had a good balance of shore explorations, zodiac cruises, and time to relax. The food was excellent. We were very fortunate in the variety of birds and native bush, as well as fur seals and that marvellous dolphin pod. The interesting talks in the evening were an added bonus
New Zealand, Sandra
We have returned from our Darwin and Ghan journey - all really fantastic and couldn't fault the organisation.  We were pleasantly surprised to have credits on the JetStar flight for food and drink, and of course the $150 at the Mindil Beach was very useful.  This hotel was truly wonderful.  The flights were well coordinated and all on time.  The temperatures in Darwin were hot but not oppressive, much cooler now.
Northern Territory Australia, Trish & Mike
We arrived back safely on the “Wings Of The Nation” yesterday morning. Your invaluable advice and meticulously planned  itinerary, worked flawlessly!  Unbelievably, we did not have a late flight, a missed connection, or lost bag the whole time away! The cruise itself was everything we had hoped for, and more, a trip of a life time! Thank you for putting together this option. One of the things that made all the difference on the cruise, was that the weather was brilliant, the whole time! The crew couldn’t believe our luck, mind you, and neither could we! Overall the whole trip was a wonderful experience. Thank you again for putting together a very successful itinerary.
Alaska, Ian
Back safe and sound after a wonderful cruise and Greek Island stay. Barcelona amazing and our little hotel was perfect. So handy to everything. The Viking cruise was pure luxury . Food, cabin décor entertainment , just perfect. My favourite places visited were Sicily, all the Croatian coast, towns and villages. Our Greek island stay very good with nice family hotel. Not so keen on the ferry. Like being in a plane. Very quick! Business was great and it would be hard to fly any other way now. Anyway Ian thank you so much for organising a great holiday for us. Very much appreciated. I haven’t completely ruled out travelling again!!
Mediterranean, Lois
My trip to India was fabulous and went without any issues. Thank You!
India, Janine
Thank you Peter for once again, your meticulous planning for us. The trains worked admirably and we had plenty of time for connections. It is sometime since we have travelled in Europe but we have had a fabulous time despite only three sunny days in UK and Europe. Free use of public transport in Basel and Geneva great. Oyster card worked well in London. Lauterbrunnen was Swiss fairytale. A three day pass meant we did heaps and the weather cleared on our last day so we enjoyed Jungfrau plus views of The Eiger. Lots of Indian tourists/ has featured in a Bollywood movie. Weather didn’t clear in Zermatt/ so didn’t see Matterhorn. Left 42 degrees in Dubai. Sunday breakfast up the Burj. Thanks Peter you are an excellent travel agent.
Holland & Switzerland, Alison
A big thank you for organising bookings for us. Everything went according to plan. Managed to catch everything, nothing delayed , except Easyjet which you kind of expect.
Europe, Lesley
We had an absolutely fabulous holiday.  I adored Switzerland, the people, the scenery, just everything.  Every day was better than the day before, couldn't fault anything. The hotels and transport were spot on.  Simon skied 5 days and I found plenty to do.  It was easy meeting people and exploring by myself. Thank you so much for all your organising.  This trip has given me so much confidence to explore other European countries and winter climates.
Switzerland, Lynne
