Linda’s ‘Mega Lekker’ escape to South Africa
The first e-postcards have arrived from me as I embark on a two-week adventure exploring the wonders of South Africa!
Our journey began as soon as we landed in Cape Town. Without missing a beat, we headed straight to Franschhoek, nestled in the heart of the Western Cape Winelands. Our home for the next few days was the enchanting Franschhoek Country House & Villas, a stunning retreat that perfectly blended luxury with rustic charm.
Franschhoek, a quaint village steeped in history and surrounded by majestic mountains, farms, and endless rows of grapevines, immediately captivated us. We spent our days wandering through its charming streets, each lined with art galleries, cozy cafes, gourmet restaurants, historic churches, and boutique shops. The atmosphere here is serene and inviting, with the backdrop of rolling vineyards adding to the picturesque setting.
Our timing couldn’t have been better, as we arrived just in time for the Village Market, held every Saturday and Sunday beneath the shade of ancient oak trees. This vibrant market was a delight, offering a plethora of fresh juices, live music, and a variety of unique stalls to explore. It was the perfect place to soak in the local culture and savour the flavours of the region.
No visit to Franschhoek would be complete without indulging in a wine tasting tour. We eagerly embarked on this quintessential experience, touring several local wineries and sampling their exquisite wines. Each sip was accompanied by breathtaking views of the vineyards stretching out beneath the clear blue sky—a scene straight out of a dream.
After a few days in Franschhoek, we returned to Cape Town, where the adventure continued. One of the highlights was our ride on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. As we ascended to the summit, the panoramic views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the distant horizon were nothing short of awe-inspiring. Standing atop Table Mountain, I felt on top of the world, surrounded by nature’s grandeur.
Next on our itinerary was the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, an iconic mixed-use area with the imposing Table Mountain as its backdrop. The Waterfront is a bustling hub of activity, combining a working harbour with an array of restaurants, bars, hotels, residential apartments, and over 450 shops. It’s an ideal base for exploring Cape Town, offering a vibrant atmosphere and endless entertainment options.
One evening, as the sun set behind Table Mountain, I captured a photo on my way to dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants. The blend of natural beauty and lively urban energy made for a perfect evening. Dining by the water, with the city lights twinkling and the sound of the harbour in the background, was a magical experience.
Each moment in South Africa has been filled with awe and wonder. From the tranquil beauty of Franschhoek’s vineyards to the bustling excitement of Cape Town’s Waterfront, this journey has been an unforgettable adventure. The warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, and the stunning landscapes have all left an indelible mark on my heart.
