Wild Canada & Alaska: Vancouver to Anchorage

16 day small group expedition

Cross British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska on a northern expedition that connects Indigenous cultures and epic landscapes
Take an incredible road trip through British Columbia, the Yukon and, finally, the majestic landscapes of Alaska. Follow the coastal mountains of British Columbia and end surrounded by Alaska’s Chugach Range, along the way passing through forested valleys, broad northern landscapes and remote tundra. As you venture, the historic connections that have long shaped Canada and Alaska come to life around you. Learn how rivers, salmon migration routes and trade networks have connected this region for thousands of years – long before today’s international border. Meet members of Canadian and Alaskan Indigenous communities and hear how fishing, hunting and shared knowledge remain central to life up North. Camp beneath the stars, paddle strikingly turquoise lakes and people who call these landscapes home as you trace this remarkable route along the epic Cassiar and Alaska Highways.

Your tour highlights

  • Meet Indigenous guides and community members across British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska, learning about fishing traditions in Witset Canyon and spending a fireside evening with Kluane hosts on their traditional lands.
  • Journey into the glacier-carved wilderness around Stewart and Hyder, where views of immense Salmon Glacier are paired with the chance to watch bears feeding along the salmon-rich waters of Fish Creek.
  • Explore the stunningly clear, turquoise waters of Boya Lake in Ta Ch’ila Provincial Park – rent a canoe or take a hike and snap as many photos as you wish of this visually spectacular wilderness setting!
  • Camp under the stars along two of North America’s most iconic roads – the remote Cassiar Highway and the legendary Alaska Highway – and get to know like-minded adventurers and the people who live year-round in these far-flung destinations.
  • Visit with members of the Ahtna community of Tazlina in Alaska, see a working fish wheel and smokehouse and learn about Copper River salmon traditions.

Conditions:

This trip covers a lot of ground, travelling overland from Vancouver to Anchorage through British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska. Some days involve several hours on the road, but regular stops, walks and experiences ensure you'll spend plenty of time exploring beyond the vehicle. Accommodation is a mix of hotels, local hotels/motels and camping. You'll spend several nights camping in remote wilderness locations, making this a great fit for travellers who enjoy the outdoors. Everyone is expected to assist with simple camp duties such as setting up tents, preparing meals and washing up during the camping portion of the trip. This journey takes you far beyond major tourist centres into some of North America's most remote regions. Accommodation, dining and services can be simple, and food and everyday items are often more expensive than in larger cities. For many travellers, these remote communities and their distinctive character are an important part of the experience. Northern weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for a range of conditions, including cool temperatures, rain and changing mountain weather, even during summer. This trip includes walks on uneven terrain, campground setup and outdoor activities. While no technical hiking experience is required, a reasonable level of mobility will help you fully enjoy the experience. During the camping portion of the trip, you'll have the option to join a food kitty of approximately USD 30 per day for meals that are not included. 1. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm on Day 1 in Vancouver. Please see Joining Point Hotel listed in the Essential Trip Information for this itinerary. This trip ends upon checkout on Day 16 in Anchorage. 2. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement applies to all nights on your trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information. 3. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag, suitable for overnight temperatures that can drop into the low 30s°F (0-5°C). Intrepid provides tents and basic sleeping pads, but for extra comfort you may wish to bring an inflatable camp mattress and pillow. 4. In British Columbia and Yukon the legal drinking age is 19, and in Alaska it is 21. 5. We are not able to book airport shuttle service for North America trips. North America has convenient taxi and rideshare options from all airports, as well as public transport systems in major hub cities. Please check the joining and finishing point instructions listed in the Essential Trip Information. 6. This trip travels through remote wilderness regions where tourism infrastructure can be limited. Accommodation is a mix of camping and hotels, and some properties in remote areas may be simple and rustic, reflecting the isolated destinations visited. Phone coverage, internet access and other services may be limited or unavailable at times. A flexible attitude and sense of adventure will help you get the most out of this unique journey. 7. During the camping portion of the trip, you'll have the option to join a food kitty of approximately USD 30 per day for meals that are not included. By pooling funds, the group can shop locally, buy ingredients in bulk and prepare meals together, helping to keep costs down while adding to the camaraderie of camp life. Travellers with dietary requirements or those who prefer to make their own arrangements are welcome to opt out and purchase their own meals.
Thanks for organising so much of our recent June/July trip to Canada, Sweden and Norway. It all went really well and the self-drive itinerary through Canada by Design was awesome...very busy but we saw and did so much!

USA, Michael & Tonia
We arrived back this morning from a fantastic time away, there were so many pinch yourself moments that we need to rely on our photographs to remember them all. Thank you for your input, everything went smoothly, as usual your itinerary, flights and accommodation was great. Everything you had arranged for us was great.  The Dylan at SFO worked out really well as was very close the BART rail. That was a great recommendation.
USA & Canada, John & Pam
Thank you for organising our USA holiday, it was fantastic. The holiday has been even better than we all imagined.  Thank you for all your help.
USA, Nicki
We had a lovely time on both the cruise and the bus tour but the Bears of course were the highlight. The cruise was great and thankfully we had beautiful sunny weather when we needed it most in Glacier Bay and College Fjord. They were absolutely spectacular. Everything on the cruise was good and we really enjoyed the talks from the Naturalist on board. The Bus Tour was also good and I think they did a good job in changing the itinerary at short notice with the Jasper Fires. The driver and Tour Director were both great.
Alaska & Rockies, Imelda
We got back from hol on Saturday and just want to say a massive thank you for all your correspondence with us and bookings that you did. We had an absolute ball and it was an adventure of a lifetime for us. A real dream come true! Loved the US and we are already planning of going back! The RHCP concert was out of this world! Here we are back in cold rainy Chch and it's not really where I want to be right now. Haha. The Beresfords Arms was perfect for our fam and the bonus of breakfast and wine and cheese in the arvo, was amazing! Car hire ran smoothly and the pickup location to hotel was fantastic! The drop off was also awesome! Hope to email you again soon with another dream!
USA, Bree
We arrived back safely on the “Wings Of The Nation” yesterday morning. Your invaluable advice and meticulously planned  itinerary, worked flawlessly!  Unbelievably, we did not have a late flight, a missed connection, or lost bag the whole time away! The cruise itself was everything we had hoped for, and more, a trip of a life time! Thank you for putting together this option. One of the things that made all the difference on the cruise, was that the weather was brilliant, the whole time! The crew couldn’t believe our luck, mind you, and neither could we! Overall the whole trip was a wonderful experience. Thank you again for putting together a very successful itinerary.
Alaska, Ian
