Tour itinerary

Day
1
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Our tour starts in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. This historic city lies in the shadow of its old castle upon the banks of the Ljubljanica River, which meanders through the charming centre.

For those arriving in time, our tour leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for a welcome meeting and for those that wish, there’ll be the chance to go out for dinner. There are no other activities planned today, so you’re free to arrive in Ljubljana at any time. If you’d like an airport transfer today, you’ll need to arrive into Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU), which is a 45-minute drive from the hotel. Should you miss the welcome meeting, your tour leader will catch you up as soon as possible.

If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you might like to explore the centre of the city on foot and take in the cafe culture along the banks of the river.

Day
2
Visit Medieval Skofja Loka and enjoy free time at Lake Bled

This morning we’ll drive to Skofja Loka, one of the oldest and most beautiful towns in Slovenia, dominated by its 13th-century castle. We’ll soak up the atmosphere of the medieval town before continuing to the picturesque resort town of Bled, situated on a tranquil lake. Widely acclaimed as one of the most fashionable European resorts in the early 20th century, this was the home of the Yugoslavian Royal Family and the summer residence of President Tito.

You might like to visit the island by travelling across in a traditional gondola known as a pletne (optional). On the island is the baroque Church of the Assumption and perched on a steep cliff above the lake is the 11th-century Bled Castle with towers, ramparts, moats and a terrace. You may also wish to walk the six kilometres around the lake past linden, chestnut and willow trees, swans and water lilies on the water. There are also rowing boats for hire (optional), or you can swim in the lake.

Later, we’ll continue to Lake Bohinj. En route, if the weather is clear, we might be able to spot Triglav, the highest Alpine peak at 2864 metres.

The name means ‘Three Heads’ and pagan Slovenes believed the mountain was the home of a three-headed deity who ruled the sky, the earth, and the underworld. It’s a sacred mountain and according to tradition, every Slovene should climb it at least once in their lifetime. The peak was first climbed in 1778 by an Austrian and three Slovenes, and the mountain features prominently on the Slovene national flag. Lake Bohinj is a naturally preserved glacial lake enclosed by steep mountain cliffs on the southern edge of Triglav National Park – an ideal base from which to explore these magnificent mountains.

Day
3
Walk to Savica Waterfall in the beautiful Triglav National Park

A true natural wonder nestled into the Slovene Julian and Kamnik Alps; the Triglav National Park is simply put – breathtaking. Founded in 1924, it’s one of the oldest Alpine nature reserves and covers an astounding 82,000 hectares. On our first day exploring this beautiful landscape, we plan to walk to the Savica Waterfall, the source of Slovenia’s longest and mightiest river, the Sava. The cascade of water tumbles into a pool 60 metres below, making for spectacular views (and even better holiday pics). To reach the waterfall, we will walk up steps before returning the same way and continuing with a pleasant 4-kilometre hike through the forest to Ukanc village.

We’ll then take the cable car up Mount Vogel to the ski station at a height of 1535m from where impressive views extend over the lake and the Julian Alps. After exploring the area, we take the cable car back down. From here there is the option to take a public bus back to the lake, or for those of you with energy to spare you can walk back. If you were after a more leisurely route, you could take the tourist boat back.

Once back at the lake, you may choose to take an easy walk around Lake Bohinj (6.4 kilometres) or hire a mountain bike and cycle quiet country roads.

Day
4
Free day at Lake Bohinj, optional walk and activities

You have a free day today to explore Lake Bohinj and the surrounding area. There are several optional walks to choose from on our second day, which could take us through deep-carved glacial valleys, across rolling hills and past springs, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. There are several walks available of varying length through the Mostnice Gorge, the longest taking around seven hours for a return journey. Alternatively, you can hire a kayak to explore the lake itself.

The park is rich in flora and fauna, and you should keep an eye out to spot chamois. The ground in spring is covered with a rich abundance of flowers; more than 10 species are endemic such as the Zois bellflower, Frolich gentian and Carniola cowslip. Throughout the countryside, we’ll see ‘kozolec’, a special kind of rack for drying hay that is unique to Slovene regions. Also known as mountain harps, there are over 30 different types.

There is also the opportunity to do some river rafting on the Sava Bohinjka River, horseriding in the surrounding countryside or canyoning in the Jerecica Canyon.

Day
5
Scenic train ride to Nova Gorica and visit to Skocjan Caves

We take the train from Bohinjska Bistrica to Nova Gorica. This journey is one of the most scenic in Slovenia with a backdrop of the Julian Alps. We pass through the Vipava Valley, a wine-growing region, onto one of the highlights of Slovenia, the amazing underground caverns at Skocjan, which have been protected by UNESCO since 1986. These five-kilometre-long caves descend 250 metres into a gigantic hollow into which a river disappears. Prehistoric people once sheltered in these caves and used them to make sacrifices to the gods of the underworld.

After a guided tour, we continue to the harbour town of Izola, situated on the Adriatic Sea. There are two distinct regions separated by a long shelf of steep cliffs extending down to the Istrian Peninsular. In the past, this natural divide has been used as a border between kingdoms: the Venetian coastal lands and the inland domains of the Hapsburgs. Olive and tangerine trees grow in abundance along the 40 kilometres of coastline. On arrival, your Explore Leader will take you on a brief orientation tour.

Day
6
Free day in Izola to explore and relax at nearby beaches

The day is left free for personal exploration. You may like to explore Izola; an attractive town that has a more authentic feel and less crowds than many other places along this coastline. You can meander along the town’s quaint narrow streets and view the timeless Venetian architecture. There are a number of restaurants and bars to take advantage of, as well as a boat-filled marina and a nice beach area.

Alternatively, just a short public bus ride along the coast is Piran – one of the best-preserved historical towns anywhere on the Adriatic that is protected as a cultural monument. From the remains of the 15th-century walls, there are some great views over the town and the sea. The ancient central square is surrounded by beautiful patrician villas and there is a monument dedicated to the local composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini. From Piran, it’s also possible to take a boat (operates June to September) over the border to the medieval city of Trieste in Italy and spend the day exploring here.

You may prefer to take a public bus to the nearby Strunjan Landscape Park. The saltpans that are part of the nature park are the northernmost saltpans in the Mediterranean. You can explore the wetland area, see the saltpans, and then take in the small museum detailing the history of harvesting the salt. There is a walk along the headland back to Izola that you might choose to do if you’re feeling energetic.

Day
7
Visit Predjama Castle en route to Ljubljana

Today we make our way back to Ljubljana with a visit to Predjama Castle, built into a dramatic 123m craggy cliff en route. This four-storey castle dates to the 16th century and has all the features a castle should have such as a drawbridge, holes in the entrance ceiling for pouring boiling oil on intruders, a dark and dingy dungeon and a 16th-century treasure chest. We drive on to Ljubljana, a small, majestic baroque city where we can visit Ljubljana Castle (optional). The original dates back to Celtic times, but the present one was mostly built after the 16th century. After climbing the 150 steps up to the tower, you can walk along the ramparts where there are some great views over the Old Town.

We've graded the pace of this tour as moderate, so you should expect a couple of long driving days. Accommodation on this tour has been graded as comfortable and premium but it's worth noting, that there might not always be home comforts. Due to the nature of hotels in the countries we'll travel through, lifts might not always be available. You'll need to carry your own luggage to your room - often up stairs - so it's worth packing light. To see our destination like a local, we use a lot of public transport. When packing, remember that you'll be loading your own luggage on and off buses and trains.
We loved our R&R in Ischia - hosts were fantastic as were the breakfasts and dinners we had there! Our favourite place on Ischia island was the very quaint village of Saint Angelo, another absolute must is dinner at Trattoria Il Focolare - amazing dining experience. We also absolutely loved our stay at Palazzo Del Duca in Matera so beautiful and OMG the breakfast!! Outstanding. So thank you Juliet all was fabulous, travel seamless as well - next adventure I will definitely be in touch.

We want to thank you most sincerely for organizing our epic trip to Europe, it went off without the slightest hassle or hitch. Your pick of hotel in the cities were spot on, nice and central, close to the metro. Many thanks for this trip of a lifetime.
Europe, May & June 2025, John & Mary
We had a fabulous trip away. Insight and Avalon were just wonderful, couldn’t fault them at all. Thank you so much for all your input and help.
Europe in Winter, Nikki & Steve
Everything you organised worked really well. The timings and explanations on arrival at places was brilliant. The hotels were all handily located to centre of old towns. The 2 Intrepid Trips provided extra understanding of the areas as did the 3 day Hurtigruten cruise.
Scandinavia, Bronwyn & Gordon
The "Sea Cloud" experience was above expectation and more! All your plans worked perfectly and we enjoyed the Somewhere Boutique Hotel at Voulagemeni. Absolutely no problem with the flights. Our accommodation was more than adequate, food excellent and the service 5+ star. We would strongly recommend this 'once in a lifetime' experience.
Adriatic, Paul & Ann
Overall its was an absolutely amazing experience, thank you for all clear information you had given us, really helpful to figure out where is our hotel and how to move from one place to another. Thank you so much for organizing this trip and doing such a good job.
Europe, Ai Ngo and Adrian
We really enjoyed the cruise and this was certainly one of the highlights of the trip. The Azamara cruise was ideal being a smaller boat (and numbers of people) but still provided great service and entertainment. The cruise we did from Athens to Venice was perfect with a destination each day to visit and a great variety of places. I would certainly recommend this cruise company and this particular voyage option.
Europe, Rob & Nikki
We’ve had a fabulous time in Portugal, outstanding guide, great food and wine and the National Geographic tour was superb. What a wonderful country, lovely people and great sights.
Portugal, David & Jill
We had a fantastic day at Plitvice today - very wet and overcast but absolutely stunning and loved every minute of our 12kms walking and photographing!! Loving our hotel here too ... another perfect one thank you!
Croatia, David & Joss
Sandra and I are back at home now after a couple of great months away.  The whole trip was great, so thanks for your help with the bookings etc. No issues at all. We very much enjoyed the Rhine cruise with Viking. We couldn’t fault their service and effort, and are happy to recommend them to others.
Europe, Murray & Sandra
The trip was fantastic thanks very much for all your input.  Everything worked seamlessly with the flights, accommodation, and car rentals that you booked for us.  The places you booked for us were all in a good location.   The cycle trip through Burgundy was also definitely a highlight. It was truly a trip of a lifetime with everything that we managed to squeeze in, and having a lot of it organised for us was a real treat.
Europe, Mike & Nicky
Our trip went very well. We loved Ireland with Back Roads, excellent guide and good group. We think of three things, its green, narrow roads and old stone fences! Very interesting history. Hurtigruten had ungraded us to Cabin 601, right at the front with three windows, nice and spacious so very enjoyable. We had rougher seas around the Hebredies and Orkneys but all good.
UK & Ireland, Barbara
Back safe and sound after a wonderful cruise and Greek Island stay. Barcelona amazing and our little hotel was perfect. So handy to everything. The Viking cruise was pure luxury . Food, cabin décor entertainment , just perfect. My favourite places visited were Sicily, all the Croatian coast, towns and villages. Our Greek island stay very good with nice family hotel. Not so keen on the ferry. Like being in a plane. Very quick! Business was great and it would be hard to fly any other way now. Anyway Ian thank you so much for organising a great holiday for us. Very much appreciated. I haven’t completely ruled out travelling again!!
Mediterranean, Lois
Thank you Peter for once again, your meticulous planning for us. The trains worked admirably and we had plenty of time for connections. It is sometime since we have travelled in Europe but we have had a fabulous time despite only three sunny days in UK and Europe. Free use of public transport in Basel and Geneva great. Oyster card worked well in London. Lauterbrunnen was Swiss fairytale. A three day pass meant we did heaps and the weather cleared on our last day so we enjoyed Jungfrau plus views of The Eiger. Lots of Indian tourists/ has featured in a Bollywood movie. Weather didn’t clear in Zermatt/ so didn’t see Matterhorn. Left 42 degrees in Dubai. Sunday breakfast up the Burj. Thanks Peter you are an excellent travel agent.
Holland & Switzerland, Alison
A big thank you for organising bookings for us. Everything went according to plan. Managed to catch everything, nothing delayed , except Easyjet which you kind of expect.
Europe, Lesley
We had an absolutely fabulous holiday.  I adored Switzerland, the people, the scenery, just everything.  Every day was better than the day before, couldn't fault anything. The hotels and transport were spot on.  Simon skied 5 days and I found plenty to do.  It was easy meeting people and exploring by myself. Thank you so much for all your organising.  This trip has given me so much confidence to explore other European countries and winter climates.
Switzerland, Lynne
